Choosing Jeans: Fits, Lengths and Fabric Details
Share
The same shirt can look different with a straight leg or a wider pair of jeans. Start with the shape you like, then check the rise, measurements and length.
Straight-leg
A straight leg gives you a fairly even shape from the knee down. Try it with a blue Oxford, a cardigan or a plain tee. Loafers and sneakers both work.
Wide-leg
A wider leg gives the outfit more volume. A shorter jacket or a tucked shirt is one way to balance it, but wear it the way you feel comfortable.
Length and stacking
Extra length can gather around the ankle, creating a stacked effect. Check the inseam and consider the shoes you’ll wear. If you prefer a cleaner hem, compare the length with a pair that already fits you well.
Distressing is a finish
Fading, worn patches and tears change the look of denim. They don’t tell you the cut, so check the fit details too.
Selvedge is a fabric detail
Selvedge refers to the fabric’s finished edge, which you may see when the hem is turned up. It isn’t a fit or a guarantee of quality. Check the composition, measurements and care instructions for the actual pair.
